Aurora Downlight Insulation Guard
The latest building regulations approved document L and the NHBC require that insulation is laid unbroken over the whole ceiling area in cold loft spaces to avoid "thermal bridging" ie the loss of heat through spaces in the insulation due to the fitment of luminaires.
Insulation Support
This means that insulation should not be cleared away from halogen downlights in loft spaces as was previously common practice. The downlight insulation guard is intended for installation in loft spaces and allows insulation to be laid directly and continuously over the guard providing a safe environment for the luminaire and transformer.
The guard also offers mechanical protection to the luminaires in a loft space which otherwise may be covered in insulation causing overheating of the luminaire and lamp resulting in shor tlife of lamps and luminaire components or a possibile fire risk.
Some manufacturers claim that insulation can be laid directly over their halogen downlights. Independent testing has proved that this is not advisable due to the high temperatures generated by halogen lamps resulting in the above problems.
Key Features
- Fire prevention in the ceiling. It isolates parts that reach up to 300oC from insulation and flammable materials with a fire resistant barrier
- Reduces substantial heating and cooling costs in living areas by allowing unbroken insulation in the ceiling void
- Prevents drafts through downlights
- Reduces noise penetration
- Stops entry of insects, dust, ceiling debris etc into the downlights
