Aurora Fire Rated Lighting

Aurora 90 Minute Fire Tested

Why do I need Aurora Fire Protection Products

Building regulations require that recessed fixtures must be installed so that the fire resistance of the ceiling is not compromised, helping control the spread of fire.

Do Aurora Fire Rated Downlights only protect against the spread of fire

No. Our downlights are constructed to comply with additional regulation within building construction that need to be considered:

What is fire resistance and how do you test for it?

Fire resistance is a surfaces ability to withstand a fire, measured in minutes. It is proven through destructive fire testing and assessment.

Where do I need to use fire protection products?

Building regulations state that any residential dwelling with a height of the top floor of up to 18m above ground should have ceilings resistant to fire for up to 60 minute

What are the current standards and what do they relate to?

British Standards (the BS 476: Part 20 series) and harmonised European Standards (BS ENs) exist for different types of building elements from floors to walls and ceilings.

What is intumescent material and how does it work?

The material is a carbon polymer matrix which, when subjected to heat (such as that caused by a fire) will soften and release gases that are trapped within it. This will cause it to expand and maintain the integrity of the fire barrier.

Key Components Aurora Fire Tested

Building Regulations Document B :

'Fire Safety' States : "Every joint, imperfection of fit or opening to allow services to pass through should be adequately protected by sealing or fire stopping so that the fire resistance of the element is not impaired.

Building Regulations Document E :

'Resistance to the passage of sound' (Jan 2005 Rev) states: "Floors and ceilings provide adequate resistance to airborne and impact sound"

Building Regulations Document C :

'Site preparation & resistance to contaminants & moisture' states: "To avoid excessive moisture transfer to roof voids, penetrations should be filled and sealed; this is particularly important in areas of high humidity e.g. bathrooms and kitchens"

Building Regulations Document L :

'Conservation of Fuel and Power' states : "Reasonable provision shall be made for the conservation of fuel and power in buildings by limiting heat loss through the fabric of the building"

The I.E.E. wiring regulations :

(BS7671 - regulation 527-02) states : "The openings remaining after the passage of wiring systems (including downlights) in ceiling, wall, etc"

Fire Protection / Fire Hoods

Aurora's revolutionary intumescent fire hood range1 is made from a fully breathable material with a patented 'Instant Release' intumescent envelope and adjustable self supporting fixing method.

This construction allows heat from the lamp to be effectively dissipated, preventing the terminal block and downlight from overheating. When exposed to fire the intumescent material will swell (intumesce) to approximately 36 times its originally volume, providing an insulating barrier against the fire and effectively sealing the hole once occupied by the downlight.

Aurora downlights will only be guaranteed if used in conjunction with Aurora fire hoods.

1 intumescent material only available in AU-FH150, AU-FH150/105, AU-FH200, AU-FH250, AU-FH300.
